Restricted Fire Zone lifted

The Restricted Fire Zone for all of Ontario has officially been lifted.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests decided to remove the RFZ this afternoon at 4 pm Eastern/3 pm Central time.

The move comes after the RFZ was put in place June 9th due to the extreme fire hazard.

The hazard has now been eased to low across much of the northwest region with pockets of moderate to high in the Kenora, Dryden and Thunder Bay districts.

Fire information officer Chris Marchand says recent cool and wet weather is helping fire crews get a handle on some of the wildfires that are still burning.

Right now the are 56 active forest fires, but Marchand notes most of them are north of Lac Seul.

In the meantime most fire departments in the region have also reinstated fire permits because the fire ban has been lifted.
