Metis hunters will likely have to wait a bit longer. France Picotte from the Metis Nation of Ontario offers an update.
"I know everybody wants it this fall," she says.
Picotte notes the province is still reviewing the Metis card system. The card is meant to allow Metis hunters to harvest for subsistence in their traditional area.
Once the review is completed, Picotte says there will also have to be an agreement with Queen's Park on enforcement.
Metis hunters would also have to be harvesting within their traditional area, as defined by the Powley decision of the Supreme Court. This would mean Metis from the district would have to be hunting in the area of their ancestors, rather than southern or eastern Ontario.
