A correctional officer has been taken hostage by inmates at the Kenora Jail. A spokesman for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services says staff are working to negotiate the officer's release.
"Our top priority is the safety of staff and we remain committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the situation," it said in a prepared statement issued by the ministry.
"There is no threat to community safety and the situation is contained within the secure part of the Kenroa Jail. Our thoughts are with the correctional officer that has been taking hostage and our focus is to find a peaceful resolution to the situation," the statement continued.
Firefighters, paramedics and police responded to the Kenora Jail before 3 p.m., although there were no flames or smoke visible from the building.
