neniskasDiane and Stuart Neniska show off a nice bag of fish Sunday at Shoal Lake.Jeff Gustafson and Karl Engstrom walked away with first place at the Shoal Lake Bass Classic over the weekend. After the final weigh-in, Gussy talked about the win.

"Yeah, it was kind of tough fishing. We didn't catch a lot of big ones, but we grinded it out five nice ones each day. A good weekend on Shoal Lake," he said with a grin.

"It's a fun lake. It's great place to have these tournaments," he said, noting they had lots of room for more than 50 entries.

"The fishing's fun. It's very clear water," he added, noting the wind helped Saturday, as the fish set up on windy points.

The forecast was a bit misleading for Sunday, as they expected more wind, but it didn't appear.

"I've fished on this lake since I was 11 or 12 years old, so I have a lot of spots, a lot of areas," he said with a smile.

Gussy says he's now looking forward to another good finish at the Canadian Bass Championships later this month in Fort Frances. With regret, he noted he'll miss Kenora Bass International this year, as he'll be competing at the Forrest Wood Cup again this year. In six years on the pro fishing tour south of the border, Gussy's made over $300,000.

At Shoal Lake, there was a rare tie for second and third place. After two days, John Frost and Jamie Bruce came in with exactly the same weight -- 31.70 lbs -- as Ian Waterer and Jayden Symonds.

Waterer and Symonds were within .04 of Gustafson and Engstrom for the lead after Day 1, but Waterer and Symonds slipped ever so slightly on Day 2, finishing with a bag that was .56 off the pace.
