Sean Hughes, Jeff Richards and Jon Johnson led Kenora's Senior AAA Thistles to a 10-2 rout of the Bottineau Lumberjacks last night in North Dakota. Kyle Turgeon, Mike Neniska, Ryan Pearson and Dan McIntyre added singles. Goalie Ryan Person got the win.
Assistant Coach Brian Olson says they led 3-1 after the first and 7-2 after the second.
"It's a case of both of us playing with a very short bench. They were missing some key players, due to injury. It was a case where you have some very experienced hockey players going against some fresh legs, and the experienced players won out," he said.
"When we're lookin' at some new guys and seeing how they fit in, it's a real good night for us, for sure," he said.
The rematch is Sunday afternoon, with a return match in January in Kenora.
Going into the game, there was some room for nerves, as the new edition of the Thistles got organized to start their season on the road against a club that's been the national junior college champion in the U.S. eight times, including their last title in 2010.
