Wabaseemoong First Nation Chief Waylon Scott was joined by former chiefs John Paishk, Ron R. McDonald and Eric Fisher, as he announced a strict lockdown in his community.

Effective 8 p.m. tonight, members will be expected to stay in their homes for a week, in an effort to control the spread of the coronavirus.

"Our community is now at a high number with confirmed cases, which is leaving us no choice," Scott said, in a video posted to social media.

The chief said he'd review the situation after seven days, with the option to go 14 days.

During the lockdown, only those with medical emergencies or appointments will be allowed in or out.

In the meantime, the community has ensured there will be enough food to support members. The Kenora Chiefs Advisory will be assisting the First Nation, during the lockdown.

"Community members, please respect the lockdown measures that are going to be put in place. Please respect the checkpoint crews. They're going to stand their ground," the chief added.
