Waterways will be busy this weekend as walleye and sauger combined season begins today.
The season starts every year on the third Saturday of May and runs until December 31 in Zones 4 and 5 (with some waterbody exceptions), primarily where Northwestern Ontario anglers fish.
Canadian residents with a Sport Fishing Licence may retain four walleye and sauger combined while those with Conservation Fishing Licences may only retain two in most parts of Zones 4 and 5.
(Note the exceptions for water bodies, including the Winnipeg River and Shoal Lake)
Those who fish on the Winnipeg River system, Rainy Lake, Rainy River, Seine River system should be aware that walleyes caught must be between 35 - 45cm. Please refer to your waterbody in the Ontario Fishing Regulations to confirm your limits and possession. Non-Canadian residents should also abide by their respective possession and limits.
Anglers are also reminded to be safe this weekend and all summer long as boaters are eager to get back on the waterways.
