Today, September 30, is Truth and Reconciliation Day and many places will be closed to the public.

The city of Kenora has announced that all city buildings and facilities will be closed from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. so that staff can participate in educational sessions.

The LCBO will be open for reduced hours, they will open at 12 p.m. and close at their regular times.

All federally regulated services will be closed for the day, for example:

  • Airports

  • Canada Post

  • Service Canada

  • Banks

  • Any business or service that operates under the Canada Labour Code

Ontario Public Service will also be closed today, despite Truth and Reconciliation Day not being a statutory holiday.

Private companies and organizations that are not federally regulated have the option to do as they see fit.

Schools and healthcare facilities such as hospitals WILL NOT be closed today.

The federal government passed legislation to make September 30 a federal statutory holiday in June, one of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of 2015’s Calls to Action, to provide opportunities for federal workers to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools.
