Greg Rickford's the MPP for the Lake of the Woods area, and he's been meeting with partners on water quality.

"I've been a great long-standing supporter of the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation," he said last week.

The provincial cabinet minister says he's met with members of the foundation, and he hopes to meet with members of the International Joint Commission.

Cottagers gathered in Kenora last week for a lively debate on future efforts to maintain, if not improve water quality in the watershed. Attendees were particularly worried about algae blooms and the impact of climate change.

Rickford noted he had a private member's bill about a decade ago, while he was an MP, which he says indicates the importance of the issue for him. Moving forward, Rickford says he wants to see how the province can work with agencies, such as the Experimental Lakes.

Critics will remember Rickford was also a government member, when Ottawa tried to close the research facility.
