Extreme forests fires in the Red Lake area have caused the Municipality to be on high alert as the Red Lake 77 and 16 fires are progressing close to the community.
The Municipality and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry continue to closely monitor the forest fire conditions. A Facebook post yesterday from the Municipality of Red Lake stated “There remains a high probability that an evacuation will be issued in the coming days unless there is a significant improvement in weather and wind conditions.”
Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources, and Forestry Greg Rickford has been working with Mayor Fred Mota of Red Lake to have a plan in place if an evacuation of Red Lake is needed.
The Municipality is asking residents to make the necessary preparations, stay abreast of pertinent communications from the Municipality, and be prepared to evacuate the community if called to do so.
“I ask that we remain patient and calm during these challenging and unpredictable times. As Red Lakers we are resilient and we will as a community, make it through this event as we have in the most recent past. Take care of each other and stay safe everyone.” Mayor Fred Mota.
As of yesterday, the Red Lake 77 fire is listed as not under control at 6900 hectares, approximately 40 kilometres west of Red Lake and crews are setting up sprinklers on structures in the vicinity of the fire.
