The Kenora area’s ice roads are opening up and residents are reminded to use them at their own risk.

Leonard Boucha, who has helped maintain local ice roads for over 30 years and provides updates on his ‘Winter Road Update for Kenora Area’ Facebook page, says the MNRF landing and the ice road to Windigo Island are now both open.

Boucha estimates there’s about 17 to 18” of ice on the roadway, but says he and his crews are still working to widen the ice road – so residents are reminded to watch for any plow trucks.

It’s a later start to the ice road season in Kenora – but many residents have warned about a higher than usual amount of slush under the snow-pack due to the mild weather the region has seen.
