Hunter handed $7,000 fine for shooting, abandoning moose

A hunter from southern Ontario is facing a $7,000 fine from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry after shooting a moose and allowing it to spoil in the fall.

Court heard that on October 20, 2022, conservation officers with the MNRF received a tip of a bull moose that had been shot and abandoned near Petry Road, northwest of Upsala.

Officers investigated and found that Robert Mijakovic of Etobicoke had been hunting for cow moose in the area and had mistakenly shot the bull moose.

Officers say instead of reporting their wrongdoing to the Ministry, Mijakovic fled the area and allowed the moose’s meat to spoil.

As well as the fine, Mijakovic has had their hunting license suspended for one year. The case was heard in Thunder Bay earlier this month.

The MNRF reminds the public that tips can be sent to the ministry at 1-877-847-7667, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
