A federal judge has ordered Public Safety Canada to restore funding for three Indigenous Police Services in Northern Ontario for a 12 month period.
This saves the Treaty Three Police Service, Anishinabek Police Service and United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service, who were on the
verge of collapse after funding ceased in March and talks on funding equity ended.
Their shutdowns would have led to 30 thousand people on 45 First Nations losing police service.
Days after the revelations Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino ordered 90 days worth of funding, to support the services.
The previous funding system handcuffed the three services, limiting their ability to investigate certain crimes and prevented them from seeking legal assistance to interpret or negotiate those funding agreements.
The Indigenous Police Chiefs of Ontario launched the motion for emergency injunctive relief in early June.
