Another candidate seeking the provincial Liberal leadership is now making his rounds in northwestern Ontario.
Dr. Adil Shamji began his tour in Thunder Bay on Monday.
He is also visiting Atikokan, Fort Frances, and Kenora.
The Toronto-area MPP says he is no stranger to the region.
“By professional background, I’m a family doctor and an emergency doctor. I’ve worked in urban emergency departments, but over my ten years of clinical practice, I’ve worked in rural and remote Ontario, going where the help has been needed the most and very much unlike the other candidates,” says Dr. Shamji.
“I have lived and worked in rural Ontario and specifically northern Ontario. And I bring that perspective. A perspective rooted in my desire to help and to serve and not just to come and campaign in northern Ontario.”
Dr. Shamji says part of his visit to the region is to hear from people about the issues and concerns that matter to them.
“I really want to know what are those local issues that I, as a leadership candidate but also as a member of provincial parliament, can take back to Queen’s Park and be the champion for. And of course, in the process of this, listening to them and in showing that I am genuinely here to serve our community and to serve the north, my hope is that people will hear from me a message that they can get behind and believe in and ultimately end up supporting me.”
Dr. Shamji is one of five candidates entered in the leadership race.
He is the last of the five to tour northwestern Ontario.
Still, Dr. Shamji feels he is the leader when it comes to delivering policy.
“What I’ve done has been to focus on the issues that I’m hearing about the most, specifically around housing, education, health care and things like that. And I’ve always brought the rural lens to that. I have another piece that will be coming out very specifically around Northern and Rural Affairs.”
The Liberals will elect a new leader on December 2.
